The U.S. Forest Service is asking visitors to stop building illegal campfires in Utah forests.

Forest Service spokesperson Suzie Tenhagen says campfires are only allowed in places specifically built by the Forest Service, but visitors keep violating that policy.

Tenhagen says using handbuilt fire pits and fire rings is illegal.

She says staff members keep coming across illegal fires that aren't put out properly and are then left unattended.

Those fires can spread, leading to wildfires like the one that happened near Springville last week.

Tenhagen says a handbuilt fire left alone with the fire not completely extinguished can lead to disaster.
