Can You Be Fired Without Cause In Arizona?
Like many adults, my greatest fear isn't spiders, clowns, or tornadoes, it's getting fired. It's an unfortunate event that many have gone through, and it never gets any easier.
The question many have after being laid off is "did I deserve that?", and we're here to answer that question for you.
"At-Will" State
Arizona is what's considered an "at-will" employment state.. This takes two separate meanings: on one hand it means that employees can quit whenever they like and not face consequences from the employer. On the other, it means that employers can fire any employees at any time.
There are, of course, exceptions to this, but overall, this allows for both parties to feel more comfortable with their work situation, not having anything locked in. This tends to work in the employee's favor, making sure they can get out of a hostile environment is need be.

Illegal Reasons to Fire
Just because Arizona is an At-Will state, does not mean employers can fire for any reason at all. Arizona law prohibits firing an employee for several reasons, such as their race, sexual orientation, being called for jury duty, or voting in an election.
If you feel you were fired for an illegal cause, the first thing you should do is contact your Human Resources department. If they fail to provide a legal reason for your layoff or simply turn you away, contact a private lawyer and discuss the facts. The law is clear, and if you have been wronged, the state of Arizona will ensure you get your comeuppance.
