Unmistakable Signs You’re Local

You don’t have to say you’re from Southern Utah. People can tell. It’s the way you talk about the weather, the way you give directions, and the way you instinctively know what’s open on a Sunday. Locals spot each other fast.
Here’s how you know.
You give directions using landmarks, not street names.
“By the temple,” “across from Swig,” or “where that one place used to be.” If a business closed ten years ago, it still counts.
You know what Swig is and have opinions about it.
You don’t need the menu. You already know your order. And you can name at least three locations without thinking.
You subconsciously track where the LDS temples are.
Not in a weird way. Just in a “turn left at the temple” way. You know exactly which one lights up at night and which parking lot is always full.
You’ve learned the hard way that Sunday dining is limited.
You either plan ahead, accept fast food, or eat at home. Those are the rules. You don’t fight them anymore.
You treat the weather like a skill set.
Ninety-five is normal. A hundred is expected. Anything under sixty requires layers and commentary. Tourists panic. You hydrate and move on.
You own more outdoor gear than dress clothes.
Hiking shoes, water bottles, camp chairs, sun hats, and at least one piece of gear you bought for “one trip” and now use constantly.
You’re unfazed by red dirt.
On your car. On your shoes. In your house. It’s not dirty, it’s just Southern Utah.
You plan your life around events and seasons, not months.
Races, festivals, school breaks, weather windows, and tourist waves matter more than what the calendar says.
You complain about growth but would defend this place instantly.
You’ll gripe about traffic and crowds all day. But the second someone from out of town talks bad about Southern Utah, you’re ready to fight for it.
Being a Southern Utah local isn’t about how long you’ve lived here. It’s about knowing where to eat, when not to bother, where to go outside, and accepting that red dust is permanent. It gets in your shoes first. Then it gets in your blood.
