We may have an over abundance of green jello and funeral potatoes here in Utah, but there is one addiction that is least likely to happen here. Wallet Hub has just released its annual list of the most gambling addicted states, and, again, Utah is dead last in the states affected by gambling addiction.

Now, gambling happens in every state, including here in Utah and Hawaii, the two states in America where gambling is prohibited by law. And not everyone who gambles has an addiction. The occasional lottery ticket buyer, or someone who makes a rare trip to enjoy some “Nevada style fun” is participating in recreational or social gambling. Same thing if you throw money at fantasy sports every once in awhile.

According to the Wallet Hub survey, Gambling Disorder affects one to three percent of U.S. adults, and this addiction can have devastating financial consequences. At its core, gambling addiction stems from a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Individuals with certain personality traits, such as impulsivity and sensation-seeking, are more susceptible. Moreover, a history of trauma, depression, or anxiety can exacerbate the risk. Access to gambling venues, online platforms, and societal normalization of gambling also contribute significantly.

The consequences of gambling addiction extend far beyond financial ruin. Relationships suffer, careers crumble, and mental health deteriorates. The cycle of anticipation, wagering, and either winning or losing triggers the brain's reward system, leading to a dopamine rush similar to that experienced with substance abuse. Over time, tolerance builds, requiring larger bets to achieve the same "high." Withdrawal symptoms manifest when gambling is curtailed, perpetuating the cycle of addiction.

Prevention efforts must address both individual risk factors and systemic influences. Education campaigns highlighting the dangers of gambling addiction, promoting responsible gambling practices, and providing resources for seeking help are essential. Regulators and policymakers must implement strict regulations on gambling advertisements, accessibility, and promotions, especially targeting vulnerable populations like youth and individuals with preexisting mental health conditions.

While gambling addiction is not a major issue for Utah, it should be no surprise no one that the most gambling addicted state is Nevada where 2.7% of adults have an addiction to gambling. The 2nd and 3rd states are a bit or a surprise to me. South Dakota has some of the most gaming machines and casinos per capita. Montana has gambling machines in retail and convenience stores.

Recovery from gambling addiction is possible with comprehensive treatment approaches. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) helps individuals recognize and challenge irrational thoughts and behaviors associated with gambling. Support groups like Gamblers Anonymous provide a sense of community and solidarity in the recovery journey. Pharmacotherapy may be employed to address underlying mental health issues or alleviate cravings.

Fortunately in Utah, a small percentage of adults are dealing with these issues.
