Promoting Safe Boating: Operation Dry Water Initiative At Lake Powell

From July 4 to 6, 2024, Lake Powell will host the national Operation Dry Water initiative, a focused effort led by Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Rangers in collaboration with the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and the U.S. Coast Guard. This initiative aims to raise awareness and enforce safe boating practices, particularly emphasizing the dangers of boating under the influence (BUI).

Throughout Operation Dry Water, there will be heightened patrols and checkpoints aimed at educating boaters about the risks associated with alcohol and drug impairment. The primary goal is to enhance boating safety nationwide by preventing incidents, injuries, and fatalities caused by impaired operators. Any individuals found boating under the influence will be promptly removed from the water to ensure the safety of all waterway users.

It is illegal to operate a vessel with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08% or higher in Arizona and 0.05% or higher in Utah. This legal standard applies to both operators and passengers, emphasizing the collective responsibility of everyone aboard to prioritize safety. The park stresses the importance of boating sober and encourages the use of U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets, especially for children under 12.

The initiative underscores that boating under the influence not only endangers those on board but also poses serious risks to others sharing the water. Beyond legal repercussions, impaired operation of vessels can lead to severe injuries and loss of life. The Operation Dry Water campaign invites all boaters to educate themselves on safe practices and pledges ongoing efforts to promote the safety of recreational boating and waterway activities.
