Utah: You Can Survive A Day Off!
We read this story on the news a few days ago, and I have to tell you, it struck me as a little weird. Here's the story:
Utahns need to make sure they have their home improvement supplies before Easter Sunday. Lowe's has joined a list of stores who will be closed on the holiday to give their workers a day off. The chain has more than a dozen stores in Utah, including in St. George. Lowe's has been keeping its doors closed on Easter each year since 2020. Ace Hardware, Target, and other major chains will also be off-limits on April 20th.
Let's start off with the apocalyptic and somewhat misleading opening statement that if you don't have your supplies for home improvement by Easter Sunday, well, you're just out of luck, as there will never be another opportunity for you to obtain materials ever again in your life. No home improvement for you!
There's also the whole feeling that because stores will be “off limits” for a day, that somehow we are all being denied essential entitlement that will lead to the collapse of society as a whole.
I think we can survive it.
In fact, I think we would be better of if these closings happened more often. I threw this phrase in to Google: “what's wrong with being closed on Sunday?” The slightly snarky response came back as:
There's nothing inherently "wrong" with a business being closed on Sunday.
Nothing inherently wrong, but you seem kind of silly if you do it.

Now lest you think this is me trying to proselyte you in to going to church, let me just say it is not. I don't care if you go to church. And if you do go to church, I don't care if you come to church with me (although you would be welcome).
There is so much talk these days about people having a work-life balance. If that is important, let me pose this question. If work-life balance is so important to individuals, why isn't it important to society as a whole? Don't we need a day off, and not just from work? Would we not be better off if we jumped away from our screens and our to-do lists and our frenetic life style and just take a day, yes weekly, to discharge and recharge from our stress filled lives?
What if we took a day to avoid the Fox News Alerts, the hand wringing of those telling tales of impending disaster and doom, and those telling us we have, at best, a bleak future, and instead of that, we just talked to each other, played with each other, and yes, for those inclined, prayed with each other?
Would that really be the end of society as we know it? I don't think so.
So, I'm sorry that some of you may be inconvenienced by some store being closed this weekend, but I think you'll make it.
Sometimes I'm around people who have children living with them, and the parents, observing that their kids have been on their screens for too long invite the kids to go outside and play.

I think it's time for Utah to go out and play.
