Check Out This Utah Pow Wow For Thanksgiving

The Paiute Tribe of Utah is holding its 18th Annual Thanksgiving Pow Wow. 

If you’re not familiar with pow wows, according to Pow Wow’s .com, pow wows are Native American gatherings in which Indigenous people sing, dance, reconnect with old friends, and celebrate their rich ancestral histories. 

There are several different stories of how the gathering started. Some believe that the pow wow originated with the War dance Societies of the Ponca and other Southern Plains Tribes. 

Many of the songs performed at pow wows range from religious to war to social and many of those songs are still sung in traditional Native American languages either newly composed or revivals of old songs. 

Most dances seen at pow wows today are social dances, which might have had different meanings in earlier days. 

The 18th Annual Thanksgiving Pow Wow takes place November 24th and 25th at the Paiute Tribe of Utah building at 440 North Paiute Drive and is free and open to the public to come and enjoy.  

While you are there you can enjoy grand entries, drum contests, dancing, and vendors.
