Earths deadliest creature is back in Utah and its super annoying.  

Besides the fact that mosquito bites are itchy and awful, some Utah mosquitos carry the West Nile Virus which can be deadly. There is currently no vaccine to prevent the disease and during the warmer months, Utahns are more likely to be infected.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are seven states that have seen at least one case of the West Nile Virus. They are mostly southern and eastern states, so there is no need for Utahns to panic just yet.

However, since the mosquito season begins in late May and can go all the way through August in the beehive state, being careful is a long and dedicated process.

The health departments in the state monitor mosquito activity and information weekly during the summer months. The state also keeps an eye on potential mosquito swarms to warn the public.  

Mosquito Abatement Teams across the state capture, monitor, and then analyze information on the mosquitoes found.  

West Nile Virus isn’t the only disease those pesky mosquitoes can carry. The CDC also monitors for Dengue, Zika, certain encephalitis's, chikungunya, Cache Valley virus, and Jamestown Canyon virus.  

Since these diseases have no vaccine and are no preventable in most cases, all you can do is be on your guard. Don’t wear bright colors, pack your bug spray, and stay away from the lights during evening hangouts.
