A company in Utah is leading the way in the battle against Alzheimer’s disease. Resonant is a biotech company located in Provo that has been studying the causes of the degenerative disease. They have developed a blood test that has had success identifying the disease and could be available by 2024.

In a limited trial the test they used was able to determine the patients who would develop Alzheimer's disease with 100% accuracy. This could be a huge benefit for people who could be identified years before the symptoms begin.

There are therapies and drugs that have been developed to slow the process of cognitive impairment. Being able to plan and begin these preventive drugs could slow the disease and extend life to those affected. This could possibly extend to other degenerative conditions like Parkinson’s disease and ALS.

All this was developed right here in Utah. Resonant’s research revealed small fragments of DNA in the blood stream called cfDNA that come from the brain’s nerve cells. These fragments have been cast off when they die, and they realized this would indicate future neurological problems.

There is a lot more to it, but basically the test reveals the level of cfDNA in the blood. You can find out more about their research on their website at resonantdx.com. It is pretty cool to see this breakthrough in medical science and it is happening right here in Utah.

Six million Americans are living with the disease according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Most of us have been affected by Alzheimer’s Disease in some way and this is a big step forward in treating making headway in defeating it.
