Fluoride Levels in Water

Since the 1950s fluoride has been added to some state’s drinking water. The decision to add this chemical has had many critics over the years who say it is unhealthy, especially for children. A recent ruling by a California judge has put a spotlight on those concerns.

Because of the benefit of preventing tooth decay, many municipalities added it to the water we drink. Later studies showed high doses of fluoride could cause problems with the bones and in pregnant women, could possibly lower their child’s IQ.

For this reason, the levels allowed in drinking water were lowered. As toothpaste companies added fluoride to their product and it would benefit the teeth without being ingested, some places stopped adding it to the water.

California Judge Orders the EPA to Further Regulate

United States District Judge Edward Chen recently ruled that fluoride has undisputed health risks, and that the EPA should further regulate it. Citizens can petition the EPA on chemicals they consider dangerous, and the ruling says they should further look at fluoride.

Not only does this require the EPA to investigate it, but it has brought awareness to what is in the water and how it affects people. You may wonder what is in the water you get from the tap.
