I have always thought of fiber as a tool to get things moving when I felt bloated or heavy.

Recently I talked to a doctor that said fiber is the food that your stomach and bowel craves.

This information changed two things in my mind, one that the stomach and bowel is a part of me that needs attention. There are lots of things I do to take care of different parts of my body. I brush my teeth, stretch and work out for my muscles, but I usually expect the digestive system to serve me. I had not considered that I could be giving it a helping hand.

Secondly, fiber, instead of a last-ditch attempt to fix a problem, could be a simple element added to serve the digestive muscles. I like the feeling of nourishing my digestion in a proactive manner rather than starving it of what it wants until a problem arises.

I should also mention that I learned good hydration makes for a happy gut. Don't underestimate the power of a hydrated digestive tract.
