With positive Covid-19 results in mind, Dixie State football, DocUtah postpone events
It was supposed to be Homecoming week for Dixie State University.
With the Covid-19 pandemic, DSU instead turned it into a scrimmage and groundbreaking ceremony.
Now that's history, too.
The University announced Thursday afternoon that the planned event this weekend, which included a tailgate party, football scrimmage, and groundbreaking ceremony, has been postponed indefinitely.
"As Dixie State University continues to protect the health of our students and community as a top priority, all Homecoming activities scheduled for Saturday, including the Traditional Tailgate, Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Greater Zion Stadium west grandstands and Red and White Scrimmage, are postponed," said the statement from the school.
"Several members of the Trailblazer football team have tested positive for COVID this week, and in an abundance of caution, all team practices and activities are being paused for two weeks to mitigate the spread of the virus."
DSU Statement
Dixie State was set to begin play at the NCAA Division I level this Fall until the pandemic put those plans on hold. The Trailblazers will compete in the Western Athletic Conference in all sports except football, where DSU will be an Independent.
DSU is still planning on starting winter sports on time, according to University spokesperson Wendi Bulkley.
"Basketball starts Nov. 25 for women and Dec. 5 for men," she said. "Our first home football game is scheduled for March 13."
On a related note, DocUtah announced it would be postponing its film festival until March.
"Out of an abundance of caution to keep our filmmakers and patrons safe, DOCUTAH is moving the 2020 Festival to March 1 - 6, 2021. The schedule and events will be exactly the same. The Website will be updated over the next week or so. If you have purchased tickets for this year's Festival, they will be honored."
