During an annual State of the University Address Wednesday morning, Richard B. Williams, president of Dixie State University announced that the school will become a polytechnic school  which means they will be an institution of higher learning that offers courses in many subjects, especially vocational and technical.

Dixie State University officials are promising the public that they have "no secret" plan to change the university's name. The calls for the name change grew stronger after the death of George Floyd while in police custody because many Utahan's say that the term "Dixie" has racist connotations and a long history of confederate symbolism. The promise was made by DSU Board of Trustees Chairperson, David Clark, which was an unscripted remark during the school's annual State of the University address and the university's president did not know of it. The president has not condemned Clark's comments nor confirmed that a name change is off the table.
