Utah, Don’t Miss This Dale Earnhardt Documentary
Every pro sporting league has an athlete perceived by many to be the face of it all.
When you think of this sport, you think of this athlete.
The NFL had a Tom Brady now they have a Patrick Mahomes.
The NBA had Michael Jordan and now has LeBron James.
From Babe Ruth to Willie Mays to Shohei Ohtani, baseball has no shortage of great’s.
These names, all legends, often stay for a period of time before ultimately being replaced by another legend, maybe not always in stats or play style but in recognition.
It’s a fluid situation, the face of a sport now, may not be in twenty years time.
There does seem to be at least one exception however, and that comes in the form of Dale Earnhardt.
Dale Earnhardt was and in many ways, still is to many, NASCAR.
The Intimidator, The Man in Black, Ironhead, Big E, by any name, was larger than the sport he competed in, a feat very few accomplish.
From his 1979 rookie season, through his 7 NASCAR cup championships, to his unfortunate passing on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, Dale was as big as any NASCAR driver has ever been or likely will be.
You didn’t have to tune in on Sundays to know what that #3 represented then, and for many it still resonates today.
Iconic is the word.
You see a #3, you see a NASCAR reference, and one can’t help but think, Dale Earnhardt.
Like with most legends, we know the career highlights, we know the feats, the highs and the lows, but there’s always more to find out.
Thus, few things mix as well as sporting legends and documentaries, and Prime Video is set to combine the racing hero and the big screen as soon as May 22nd, a Thursday, in order to share more about the 76 time race winner in the Cup series.
It’s a four part docuseries, with the first two episodes releasing that day of the 22nd.
The final two, will hit the scene a week later on May 29th.
All this coincides and sandwiches the first ever NASCAR Cup series race on Amazon Prime Video, the 2025 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway which takes place on May 25th.
The series is coming from Academy-Award Winning Executive producers, Brain Grazer, Ron Howard, Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin.
The synopsis on NASCAR.com reads:
““Earnhardt” will dive into the rich history of Dale Earnhardt, one of the sport’s most influential figures to ever compete at NASCAR’s highest level. Through rare archival footage, thrilling races and emotional interviews from his children, colleagues and closest friends, the docuseries will depict Dale Earnhardt’s rise to NASCAR stardom and nationwide fame. Earnhardt’s navigation of family dynamics — including that of his son, Dale Earnhardt. Jr. — will also be explored.”
Fans of Dale, fans of NASCAR, just fans of sports in general aren't going to want to miss this one.
I for one will have the popcorn ready.
