Water is something that catches the attention in Southern Utah, and with continued growth, the county is always trying to accommodate future growth. La Verkin is the place where cutting edge technology and water supply meet.

How to Use the Water Running Down the Drains

Storing more water in reservoirs is one option to supply a growing population in this warm corner of the state. There is another option. What if we used the water that is running through the drains in our homes?

brand-new facility built by the Ash Creek Special Service District will take the wastewater from toilets and sinks and move it through a series of treatments that turns it into water that can be used for schools grounds, parks, and farmland.

This thing will crank through 1.5 million gallons of water a day. This is a big boon to the county’s water supply. Water treatment facilities aren’t new, but the technology used in La Verkin is pretty cool.

Doesn’t Look Like Your Usual Water Treatment Plant

The new facility cost $50 million and was paid for by fees on growth. Makes sense since that is what is driving the need for water. However, you could easily drive past this place and not have any idea what it does.

That is because it is in a building that looks like any other you might find in an industrial area. It shields the sounds you might hear if you live nearby. Best of all, through a series of filters, there aren’t the smells you usually find at a sewage treatment plant.
