Brianhead Resort is set to open and start the ski season on Friday, November 21st, a month before the winter solstice. The resorts up in northern Utah are delaying the start of the season due to a lack of snow, so Brianhead has the opportunity to be the leader for the state for the time being. But the lack of snow in the north didn't stop Utah from showing up well in a new survey.

Utah stands out as a powerhouse in the ski world, and according to PeakRankings, several of its resorts offer some of the most compelling mountain experiences in North America. The list of top-tier ski areas in Utah reflects a deep diversity of terrain, snow quality, and visitor experience.

Utah's Top Resort Says No To Snowboarding!

Topping PeakRankings’ Utah list is Alta, a mountain that earns its #1 spot by virtue of near-perfect snow and a distinct local character. It’s celebrated for its exceptional accumulation and consistency of powder, along with a terrain diversity that appeals to skiers who are drawn to both challenge and beauty. One notable quirk: Alta prohibits snowboarding, reinforcing its traditional ski-only vibe.

Close behind is snowbird, ranked second in Utah. Snowbird combines top-tier snowfall with very demanding terrain, especially for expert skiers. Its mountain logistics are described as “innovative,” helping skiers navigate its steep, complex layout. The resort’s lift network and expert terrain draw in advanced skiers looking for a serious challenge, though the offerings for beginners are more limited, and lodging is not as plentiful as at some other destinations.

Coming in at third is Snowbasin, located near Huntsville. Snowbasin does not have on-site lodging, but makes up for that with high-quality facilities, impressive topography, and terrain that works well for intermediate and advanced skiers. Its lifts and mountain infrastructure are among the best, though its overall vertical and expert terrain may not push quite as hard as some of its competitors.

Ranked fourth in Utah is Deer Valley, a resort that emphasizes guest service and a premium ski experience. PeakRankings notes its strong infrastructure and a policy that helps manage crowds, but also describes its layout as “upside-down”—meaning some of the more remote terrain is accessed in ways that not everyone finds intuitive.

Further down the list, Solitude earns attention for its “stunning upper-mountain footprint” and challenging expert lines, though it does not offer extensive beginner terrain and has limited lodging. Brighton, similarly scored, is praised for its snow quality, high-speed lifts, and unique tree skiing across a variety of abilities. Night skiing expands its appeal, though navigating between its mountain sections can be tricky. And Sundance rounds out the top Utah resorts in PeakRankings, noted more for its picturesque scenery and low crowds than for sheer scale or vertical, making it a relaxing choice for skiers who favor a quieter, more rustic mountain feel.

What this ranking underscores is Utah’s remarkable concentration of high-quality ski terrain in a relatively compact geographic region. From the steep, snow-rich slopes of Snowbird and Alta to the refined resort feel of Deer Valley, and from the backcountry-like serenity of Solitude to the family-friendly charm of Brighton and Sundance, Utah’s ski offerings cater to a broad swath of skiers. According to PeakRankings, each resort has carved out a distinctive niche, yet together they contribute to the state’s reputation as one of the top skiing destinations in the country.
