I've written before of my pleasure in getting in the car and just going someplace. I love driving and being on a road trip. It will be a sad day when the kids come to me and tell me it's time to hand over my keys. Well, that day is not here just yet, and it seems like I have found a state to live in that is one of the country's best for taking a road trip.

Utah placed fourth overall in WalletHub’s 2025 “Best & Worst States for Summer Road Trips” report. The ranking reflects Utah’s well-rounded performance across three major categories: cost, safety, and activities.

WalletHub evaluated all 50 states using 32 metrics grouped into those three categories, each weighted equally. Utah stood out for offering travelers an ideal blend of affordability, safety, and recreational opportunities. Its strong showing highlights the state’s appeal to families, adventurers, and budget-conscious travelers alike.

Utah’s scenic byways, national parks, and outdoor attractions make it a standout destination

the report noted. From Arches and Zion to the Alpine Loop, Utah offers expansive landscapes and high accessibility to public lands. Combined with competitive lodging and camping rates, the state presents a compelling value for road trippers.

Highway Safety Enhances Utah's Ranking

Utah’s high marks in safety also contributed to its ranking. The report considered road quality, traffic laws, and crash statistics. Utah’s investment in infrastructure and traveler safety continues to support its reputation as a reliable and enjoyable place to explore by car.

While Minnesota claimed the top spot overall, followed by New York and Ohio, Utah’s fourth-place finish puts it ahead of traditional travel giants like Florida and Texas. States like California and Hawaii, despite their natural beauty, landed much lower on the list due to high travel costs and infrastructure challenges.

The WalletHub report suggests that travelers seeking a scenic, activity-rich road trip without breaking the bank should consider Utah as a top-tier destination. Whether planning to explore mountain trails, desert highways, or national monuments, Utah delivers a road trip experience that’s as memorable as it is accessible.
