
Motorcycle Safety Courses Discounted In UT After A Surge In Deaths

With Utah’s stunning landscapes and areas that don’t see any snow during the year it should come as no surprise that motorcycles are popular. Riding through traffic, taking a trip up to Zion National Park, you can see a motorcyclist riding just about anywhere.

However, the state saw a surge in motorcycle fatalities in 2024. This has prompted the Utah Department of Public Safety to take action. Discounted safety courses will now be offered in hopes of lessening motorcycle accidents and fatalities, KSL said.

There is also legislation going into effect on May 7 which will increase the fine for unendorsed motorcyclists to $350.
Just How Bad Were Utah’s Motorcycle Stats?
In 2024, Utah saw its highest level of motorcycle fatalities (53) since 1994, marking a 15-year high. There were also 38 serious injuries from crashes.
In the U.S. motorcycle deaths have been going up. A study found that in 2023, 6,335 people, both passengers and riders were part of fatal crashes. The number has steadily been increasing over the years.
Though motorcyclist only make up 3% of registered drivers in the U.S. (same in Utah), motorcyclists make up 15% of traffic fatalities. In Utah, they account for 19%.
In 2025, Utah has already had 10 motorcycle fatalities. With July being one of the deadliest months for motor vehicle crashes in the state, the UDPS is hoping to get ahead of it with new fines and discounted safety courses.
