Meeting held at Dixie State University for those who don’t want the name changed

An open meeting was held for residents to present their reasons for keeping the name Dixie in their university’s name. The meeting was held Tuesday night at 7pm on the Dixie State University Campus Representatives from the name change committee were there including Julie Beck, who’s mother is a Hamblin and has many ancestors from this area.   Beck assured those fighting to keep the Dixie name that this meeting was just the first of several chances to hear them defend the name of Dixie.

George Staheli spoke at that meeting with great emotion, explaining that from being able to attend Dixie with a low grade point average, he was able to go on and get his doctorate degree. He also spoke of the school’s name being changed several times.

Kanton Vause honored his grandmother, Dixie Andrus, who was in attendance, and then spoke about going to the state capitol and talking to the state representatives. Vause said those who were in favor of the name change were given more time to speak than those who were against it.   

Vause also expressed his frustration with trying to make an appointment to speak with Dixie State University President Richard “Biff” Williams.  Vause was finally referred to an intern at the school.

A professor at the school, Craig Seegmiller, spoke about teaching math and how bias can be introduced.  He said that a bias was introduced into the Cicero study to get the desired results.  He also said he hopes he doesn’t lose his job.  Seegmiller reminded the committee that the holocaust was cancel culture and that cancel Culture is just plain evil.
