New research from the University of Utah shows that nearly half of all patients may not be sharing important information with their doctors during visits.

In the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open, researchers asked patients if they would talk about issues such as domestic violence, sexual assault, suicidal thoughts or depression with their doctors.

From the two groups asked, forty-percent of one group and 47-percent of the other answered that they were experiencing at least one of those issues, but never discussed it.

Women and those in poorer health were more likely to withhold the information.
