A Washington County community is recognizing a lifeguard for saving the life of a five-year-old boy.

Lifeguard TJ Packer says he heard some commotion from a family swimming at the Veyo Pool and Resort and quickly sprung into action, pulling the lifeless body of the boy from the bottom of the pool.

He then put his training to use and started chest compressions until water came flying from the boy's mouth.

The Dammeron Valley Fire Department recognized Packer with the Life Saver Award over the weekend, and Packer took the moment to say that the experience is a reminder of how important it is to be prepared.
