Governor announces deal on rule banning conversion therapy

Governor Gary Herbert is announcing a deal he says will create a new rule banning LGBTQ conversion therapy in Utah.

State Representative Craig Hall, who sponsored a bill that would ban the practice during the last session of the legislature, welcomed the deal.

Herbert said in a statement last night that he was grateful to the many parties who discussed and help craft the new rule, which should take effect in January.

The revised rule is supported by both the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and LGBTQ advocacy groups like Equality Utah.

The state's Psychology Licensing Board will give the public a chance to comment on the rule before it goes into effect.

Craig Hall says he appreciates the difficulty of trying to create a deal between groups that hold opposing views on conversion therapy.
