If you looked at all the former NBA players that have been a part of the Utah Jazz, which one would you pick to end up being mayor of a town? If you thought 7 foot 2 Greg Ostertag would make a perfect Texas mayor, you were onto something.

A New Role: Ostertag's Commitment to Leadership

The former center for the Utah Jazz settled down in Mount Vernon in Northeast Texas. He bought a ranch in this town of 2,650 where he has camels, a zebra, and some emus along with horses and chickens.

He was also elected this year as the mayor of the town. If you pick the candidate who stands the tallest, it would be hard to beat Ostertag. He also does some substitute teaching which also seems admirable.

Other Jazz Players That Might Have Gone Into Politics

Of all the former Jazzmen I wouldn't have picked him as the one to be a mayor. John Stockton seems like he could go far in politics. He was good at making things run smoothly, but he is more into coaching his kids than running local government.

And who wouldn't respect Karl Malone's wishes when it comes to law and order. I'm thinking of the time Isiah Thomas and the Pistons thought they could get away with their dirty antics in the Delta Center.

Andrei Kirilenko is the President of the Russian Basketball Federation that oversees the sport in that country. Seems like a short jump to being president of a province or maybe taking over when Putin retires.

Still, Ostertag did seem to have varied interests and a willing spirit. He was always likable did a good job guarding the paint. I guess I should have seen it coming.
