Chapter 11 Playground Threats 65

A big girl named Tanya sat next to him in his home room class. She wore tight brown pigtails from the side of her head, flat eyes and an expression that looked like she smelled something offensive.

One day he walked in, sat in his assigned seat and began pulling out his books. Tanya quietly leaned towards him and said, “You are the ugliest person I have ever seen.” She then knocked the books off his desk. The teacher was otherwise occupied and only noticed when Jonathan leaned down to gather them.

When class ended Tanya walked past him while he was still sitting and knocked her elbow into the back of his head. Searing pain rocked through his skull and made his eyes water.

He felt humiliated and confused. He didn’t know why the big girl disliked him so much and he had no idea what to do about it. So, he did his best to avoid her and to just quietly take it when he couldn't. It made him feel powerless and ashamed, only increasing the anxiety he felt at school.

Then one day on the playground, a new threat arrived, a boy named Bronco who was from an older grade. He was tall and thick with hair buzzed by clippers, slouchy pants and a black, oversized T-shirt. He had two friends named Britton and Conner who were both short and stocky. They zeroed in on Jonathan as a loner kid on whom they could dish out some persecution.
