Experts Watch Sizable Swarm of Earthquakes to the North of Utah
In the last few days there have been a number of earthquakes in central Idaho with the biggest a 4.0 on Tuesday morning. This swarm has been located near the town of Stanley and could indicate something bigger happening in the near future.
The Sawtooth Fault is Seismically Active
This fault where the earthquakes have been happening was responsible for a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in 2020. These smaller temblors may indicate another significant quake could be coming.
It could be that these small quakes with 10 in the last few days that have been greater than 3.0 could relieve the pressure on the fault as well. It isn’t clear what to expect, but seismologists are watching it closely.
As of the time of this writing there had been 133 earthquakes around this part of Idaho. Most have these have been small and deep in the earth. The number has officials in the gem state and surrounding areas paying attention.
Preparing for an Earthquake is Always a Good Idea
The Sawtooth fault is in a sparsely populated part of the state. It is part of a larger system of faults that make up the tectonic plate below much of the west. That means the pressure in this Idaho fault could increase pressure in faults in Utah and Wyoming.
