Lawmaker to reintroduce Equal Rights Amendment

A state lawmaker from Taylorsville plans to reintroduce the Equal Rights Amendment in a bid to have it ratified in Utah and make it part of the U.S. Constitution.

Democratic state Representative Karen Kwan says Utah could become the 38th state to ratify the amendment if her bill is approved by the state legislature.

The amendment was first proposed in the 1920s and gradually gained support through the 1970s, with more than 30 states ratifying the amendment.

The bill is sure to face opposition from conservative groups like the Eagle Forum and possibly from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which opposed the bill in the 70s and 80s.
