Utah lawmaker wants to dissuade schools from dropping mascots

Utah lawmaker is hoping to dissuade schools from dropping mascots that are deemed offensive.

Republican Representative Rex Shipp has introduced legislation that would discourage removing names, images, or symbols of Native Americans and other indigenous people from schools or anywhere else.

Shipp said his bill is a direct response to last year's decision by the Iron County School Board to drop the name "Redmen" at Cedar High School.

Shipp argues local Native American communities should be given more input before any future changes occur.
