A Utah lawmaker wants to limit the ability of police to use DNA obtained through home test kits in their investigations.

Republican Representative Craig Hall of West Valley City says he doesn't believe police should have unlimited power to search for information gathered by companies like 23andMe and Ancestry.com.

Hall says he doesn't believe police should be able to look for information without having a specific suspect in mind or a warrant seeking specific information.

Supporters of his bill say the issue is individual privacy and consent, which can't be given when police conduct a mass search.

Connor Boyack of the Libertas Institute says his group supports the bill because it protects the privacy rights of individuals.
