A state lawmaker wants to create a constitutional amendment that would offer a tax break for Utah homeowners who take steps to prevent wildfires on their property.

Under Senate Joint Resolution Ten from Republican State Senator Dan Hemmert, homeowners could get a property tax exemption for the cost of mitigation work they do.

The proposal comes as response to recent wildfires that have ripped through the state and destroyed homes and cabins.

Because it's a proposed amendment, voters would have the final say on the matter on the 2020 ballot.
