The owner of the Salt Lake Tribune is seeking federal approval to turn the newspaper into a non-profit organization.

The paper confirmed last night that owner Paul Huntsman has asked his lawyers to approach the IRS about the change.

The paper would be run by a public board and would switch to a model that would fund its operation through donations.

The Tribune has struggled to operate profitably, and last year laid off a third of its staff due to financial difficulties and other factors.
