The IRS has approved the request from the Salt Lake Tribune to transition into a nonprofit news organization.

The newspaper's ownership applied for the status earlier this year as a way to keep the Tribune alive as funding through the traditional advertising revenue model dries up.

As a nonprofit, the Tribune will be governed by a board of directors and will be funded through donations from the community.

Editor Jennifer Napier-Pearce says the move could help the Tribune expand its offerings in the future.
