Registered sex offenders facing new charges

Twenty-one registered sex offenders in Salt Lake City face new charges for violating the terms of their probation.

Detective Greg Wilking of the Salt Lake City Police Department says officers conducted 142 compliance and residence checks over a four-month period.

The checks consist of making sure offenders are living in homes they have on file, and the cars they are using are registered with the state.

Utah does not have a central agency to check on offenders, meaning individual police departments have to do it.

Wilking says the city has to maintain constant oversight of those who are listed on the state's sexual offender registry.
