State Auditor wants state leaders to improve roads without gas tax
Utah State Auditor John Dougall is pushing state leaders to find a new way to pay for roads that won't involve the gasoline tax.
In a report released yesterday, Dougall said the "gas tax is slowly dying" as more drivers switch to more fuel-efficient cars and use alternative-fuel vehicles.
UDOT is studying some solutions, including imposing more tolls, particularly for the canyon roads to ski resorts.
Earlier this year, UDOT launched a voluntary Road User Charge program for electric cars where drivers choose to pay by the mile.
