A Utah man who hoped to cause a major West Coast power outage is heading to prison for causing damage to a Kane County electric substation.

Stephen McRae of Escalante was sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting out cooling fins at the substation in 2016.

McRae told federal investigators he hoped to cause a major electric outage to call attention to how humans are causing rapid climate change.

His actions caused an outage in Kane and Garfield counties that lasted for eight hours.
