Republican Sens. Mike Lee and Mitt Romney are among 14 senators to co-sponsor legislation to ensure the wide-reaching plan forged between the seven Colorado River Basin states and Indian tribes could be implemented without delay.

The river has seen a 19 percent decline in its flows since 2000.

Lawmakers called the plan a grassroots, state-driven solution to ensure drinking water for 40 million people, irrigation for 5.5 million acres of farmland, and more than 4,000 megawatts of carbon-free hydropower for communities across the West.
