Washington County Attorney Brock Belnap will step down as County Attorney on February 17, 2020. Belnap has accepted a position at the Washington County Water Conservancy District.

As a result of the pending vacancy, an election to fill the unexpired term of County Attorney will take place this year.

The filing deadline for interested candidates is March 19, 2020.

Utah law requires the Washington County Commission to appoint a deputy county attorney to serve as Acting County Attorney until a replacement is elected and qualified.

The Commission has invited all current deputy county attorneys to submit applications to serve as Acting County Attorney.

To facilitate an orderly transition, the Commission will review the applications and select an Acting County Attorney at a Special Commission meeting on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 10:00 AM.

The Acting County Attorney will be sworn in at the Commission’s regularly scheduled meeting on February 18, 2020 at 4:00 PM.

Belnap has served as County Attorney since 2003. During his tenure, Belnap’s office prosecuted tens of thousands of cases. Belnap implemented new programs focused on reducing recidivism and protecting the rights of victims.

A focus of Belnap’s tenure was ongoing efforts to eliminate corruption and abuse in the fundamentalist communities of Hildale and Colorado City.

Belnap also lead the County’s legal efforts to preserve access to public lands.
