Utah: The Air In Your Home Might Be Killing You
Air pollution is a big deal in Utah and it's ruining our health. Our air gets thick and disgusting, and it seems that everything we do contributes to the problem. Our house should be our refuge. Not a place that makes breathing harder or gets you sick.
It's winter in Utah. Unless you have done something about it, that means the air in your home is probably full of toxins. Our houses stay all closed up tight during the winter to help us stay warm and that does a number on the air in our homes. The air gets stale and stagnate. It also gets pollution/toxin build up.
Here is a list of the biggest offenders of toxic air in our homes:
- Oil
- Gas
- Coal
- Wood
- Damp carpet and cabinetry or furniture made of certain pressed wood products
- Household cleaning products
- Central heating and cooling systems and humidification devices
- Outdoor air pollution getting in
That's a lot of pollution building up in your home. So what can you do about it?
1. Ventilate your home
First, check your vents and make sure they are clean.
You can turn on your house fans for 15 mins everyday and vent out some of the pollutants.
Turn on the bathroom fans and the kitchen fan and leave them on as long as you want to circulate the air in your home, take out the toxins and freshen it as well.
Another way to clean out the pollution is just before you start a fire, open a few windows to circulate the air and get rid of some of the pollutants in your home before you warm it up.
2. Filter your air
There are several table top or floor standing air purifying/filtration systems on the market and the are fairly inexpensive. Make sure to check how many square feet the system will filter. Also, make sure to check and change the filters.
3. Kill the stench
This one can be tricky because you don't want to add to the pollutants in your home. Here are a few things you can do....
You can use essential oils on your air filters in your home. You can also put essential oils on a clean rag and put it in the heater vent to circulate it throughout the room.
After eating any citrus, just put the peels in some boiling water on the stove to clean and freshen the air. Don't forget those peels can do double duty by putting them down the garbage disposal to clean and freshen there as well!
