Chapter 12 Overthrown by Fire 71
“Fire requires three things, oxygen, fuel and heat,” said Borgin. He closed his hand and extinguished the flame, then opened it again and revealed a small, black rock. “This contains carbon. As you have learned, carbon has a structure that makes it...flammable.” As he said this last word the stone burst into a blue flame.
He held the bottom of the rock and it continued to burn as they watched. “What you see is not the actual rock burning,” he continued with the classroom entranced by the dancing blue fire. “The heat changes the molecular structure of the carbon. The bonds break and the unbound atoms combine with the oxygen. This glowing gas is what you see as the blue flame.”

Borgin spilled a bag full of the small black stones onto the floor in front of them. The students scrambled to retrieve one. Grabbing one for himself, Succubus studied the deep black of the carbon nugget.
