El Niño Brings Wetter Winter Ahead For Southern Nevada Through January

Super El Niño. It sounds like Las Vegas is about to be swallowed by a weather apocalypse, but the more realistic outcome is probably a wetter, somewhat cooler winter—with Vegas residents dramatically overreacting to every puddle.

NOAA says there’s a greater-than-90% chance of a very strong El Niño through January 2027, with southern Nevada leaning toward wetter conditions. Historical data also shows Las Vegas tends to get more precipitation during El Niño winters.

Vegas, Meet Your New Weather Anomoly

Las Vegas has survived 115-degree afternoons, dust storms and tourists wearing flip-flops in December. But this winter, Mother Nature may have something even more terrifying planned: rain.

How will a potentially historic El Niño be manifest for Southern Nevada? Not to spoil the drama, but it will probably mean a wetter and somewhat cooler winter than usual.

Basically, Vegas might actually have weather.

## Bring an Umbrella This Time.

Historically, Las Vegas has seen more precipitation during El Niño winters, particularly from November through April.

This could mean more rain, more clouds and possibly a few mornings when Las Vegans look outside and say, “What is this gray stuff?”

## Snow? Don't Get Crazy.

Before anyone starts shopping for snow shovels at Costco, let's calm down. El Niño doesn't guarantee snow in Las Vegas. In fact, historical data suggests significant snow is actually less likely during El Niño episodes.

So don’t expect the Strip to look like Park City.

I hope I am wrong, I mean Iike a crazy desert winter season as much as the next storm chaser, but we should probably dream and plan big, but expect the possibility of a cooler, wetter winter, with storms occasionally rolling through and everyone suddenly remembering how to use their windshield wipers.
