The Perfect Job for Serial Killers Involves Big Trucks

A disturbing story recently came out about an FBI initiative that started in 2009 to identify and gather information on murders that have happened along the nation’s highways. They found the job of a long-haul trucker lends itself to what a serial killer is looking for.

These road warriors travel through many jurisdictions and frequent areas where there are few witnesses. In the book written about the subject, Frank Figliuzzi who worked for the FBI, said there are 25 former truckers in prison for multiple murders.

The program gathered cases from across the country looking for patterns. They also trained other truckers to recognize suspicious situations. This was smart to use the resources of those in the industry. It is a fascinating look into a dark place in our nation.

What Information Came Up in Utah?

In his book Figliuzzi says there have been approximately 850 murders since 1980 and of those, 200 have not been solved. In a map showing the unsolved cases, there are just a few in Utah. A couple near Salt Lake and one near highway 89 in Southern Utah.

For some reason the FBI has stopped the program. They may have a new way of catching these killers that they don’t want to give details about.

I think one thing to learn from this information is that like the truckers who were trained, we can all be aware of what is happening around us and report anything suspicious.
