Would Utahns Go For A Tiny Data Center that Sits on the Side of Your House?
Data Centers have become controversial in Utah and there is the same kind of opposition happening in other parts of the nation. These giant facilities are loud and generally unwanted but there is a company that is offering a smaller solution.
Harnessing Underused Electrical Capacity for the Future
Span is a company that is already installing small units on homes and businesses that can be accessed by companies the same as a large data center. They say it is far cheaper to install and together provides the same kind of computing power.
Their idea is to use the electrical capacity that is underused in homes and businesses. They are also small and quiet compared to the noise a large datacenter makes and they don't need the huge water cooling system.
The Future Is Small: Rethinking Data Centers
The benefit for the homeowner is the company pays for much of their utility bill and provide internet access as well. Basically, the company is paying the bills of the people willing to host it on their property.
With as quickly as new ideas and new technology continues to evolve, the time to build a huge data center may prove out of date by the time it is done. A smaller version that costs a lot less to build out, seems like a better solution.

It would certainly be easier for a community to get behind a data center that lowers the average person's cost of living and didn't take up huge tracts of land in the state.
