I put roots down many years ago, and I do believe I will live out my days where I am now. My wife's mom was concerned that after we married, I would move us back to California. Not happening. No, I'm settled in, and more than happy we've made our way to southern Utah. Moving to Utah was an easy choice to make.

Anyone considering a move to Utah may be drawn by the state’s scenery, strong economy and outdoor lifestyle, but a recent report from Best Utah Real Estate suggests that not every community is the right fit for every newcomer. The report identified 10 Utah cities and towns where buyers may want to look more carefully before making a costly move.

West Valley City topped the list largely because of concerns about crime in certain neighborhoods. While many parts of the city remain stable and affordable, the report said some buyers may be attracted by lower home prices without fully researching local conditions.

Tooele was noted for its long commute into Salt Lake County and difficult winter driving conditions. The city has grown rapidly because of relatively affordable housing, but traffic congestion and transportation challenges can frustrate commuters.

Eagle Mountain also made the list because of explosive population growth. Although the area offers newer homes and family-friendly neighborhoods, infrastructure and road systems have struggled to keep pace, creating lengthy commute times.

Vineyard, one of Utah County’s fastest-growing communities, was cited for concerns tied to overcrowding and ongoing development. Rapid expansion has transformed the former small town into a dense residential area in just a few years.

Kearns and South Salt Lake were highlighted for crime concerns and aging infrastructure. According to the report, some newcomers may overlook neighborhood differences when searching for lower-cost housing options near Salt Lake City.

Ogden appeared on the list because of variations in crime rates and property conditions between neighborhoods. However, the city has also experienced redevelopment and growing popularity in recent years.

Southern Utah Makes The List

The report also included Washington City and parts of the St. George area, where fast growth has placed pressure on roads, water resources and public services. Some newcomers relocating from larger cities may also find fewer entertainment and nightlife opportunities than expected.

Price was mentioned because of economic limitations tied to the decline of coal-related industries. Fewer job opportunities and population stagnation can make relocation difficult for some families.

Finally, Hildale was included because of its isolated location and lingering social challenges connected to its history.

The report emphasized that no city is entirely good or bad. Instead, buyers are encouraged to carefully research neighborhoods, schools, transportation, air quality and long-term growth before relocating anywhere in Utah.
