Mother's Day has passed, and it's starting to look like we are closing the books on winter for the year. And as the weather begins to warm, the mountains of Utah are inviting us back up, and one thing that indicates that process is underway is the opening of seasonal roads closed in the state during the snow season.

On Tuesday, the Utah Department of Transportation indicated on their website that two seasonal roads had reopened for the summer.

State Route 35 is open. If you're not familiar with that highway, it connects eastern Summit County with the Uintah Basin. While a portion of that road is open year round, the segment that runs from Francis in the west to Hanna in the east over Wolf Creek Pass closes every winter.

Probably of more interest to those of us in southern Utah, is that State Route 148 has reopened. That is the road that can take you to the Cedar Breaks National Monument from from State Route 14 going up Cedar Canyon. For you wanting to get up there, they are already making the transition.

As winter fades away and Cedar Breaks National Monument welcomes back warmer weather, the park is gearing up to offer an array of activities for visitors this summer. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, stargazer, or history buff, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

While winter may be fading, conditions at 9,000 feet can still change quickly so before you head out, be sure to check the Current Conditions Page for the latest updates on what's open and closed within the park.

The park's temporary Information Center, situated on the east side of the main park road, is open daily. Here, you can chat with a ranger, pay your entrance fee, or purchase an interagency park pass.

Point Supreme Campground will open its gates on June 14, 2024. Remember, all campsites must be reserved in advance on www.recreation.gov. Limited first-come, first-served sites may be available if there are cancellations.

Interested in joining ranger-led activities? Swing by the temporary Information Center or check the calendar of events page for details on programs and starting times.

Don't miss out on the opportunity to experience the breathtaking night sky. From May 24th to September 22nd, head to the North View Overlook for an evening under the stars. The Night Sky Programs are on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Mark your calendars for the park's monthly festivals running from June through September. Each event offers unique programming and experiences for visitors to enjoy. Again, you can specific information on the park calendar page.

Kids can get in on the fun too with Junior Ranger Activity Books available at the temporary Information Center or from roaming rangers throughout the park.

Please note that Point Supreme Overlook is currently closed to all visitors due to ongoing construction of the park's new visitor contact station. For your safety, avoid this area until construction is complete. That is expected sometime in July.

For now you need to plan ahead and use restrooms in Brian Head or Cedar City before visiting the monument. Portable toilets will soon be available at various locations within the park.

We'll keep you updated when more seasonal roads open in Utah. I'm looking forward to the reopening of State Route 153, the Mount Holly Highway. We took that drive last season and it was spectacular.

And while not a Utah mountain road, those who have been anxious to get to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, the Arizona Department of Transportation is set to open Arizona Highway 67 on Wednesday, May 15th. Make sure to check for latest conditions.
