A man has passed away this morning after a trench collapsed on him Monday afternoon. He has been identified as Britton Wilson according to St. George Police Public Information Officer Tiffany Atkin.

The incident was first reported about 4:30 p.m. and took place near 3430 E. 2170 South, according to St. George Fire Department Chief Robert Stoker.

The man was working at the site of a major city public works project. Crews are installing new water and sewer lines and widening the road, he said.

The man, who was in his mid-20s, was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

The man was an employee of a local excavation company that is contracted with the City of St. George for the sewer project.

Chief Stoker did say  that all appropriate safety measures were in place at the site, including trench blocks. They had reportedly taken the blocks out to move them when the accident occurred.
