As part of the effort to modernize infrastructure, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will improve the Water Canyon Road between the Squirrel Canyon and Water Canyon trailheads from June 28 to August 30.

During construction, the road will only be open to pedestrian traffic.

Visitors can still access the Water Canyon Trailhead by parking vehicles at the Squirrel Canyon Trailhead and walking approximately one mile through the construction area to the Water Canyon Trailhead.

The road improvements include the grading and surfacing of the road, installation of a low water crossing, culverts, grade dips, linear ditches, lead off ditches, armoring and related site work.

The Water Canyon and Squirrel Canyon trailheads serve as gateways into the Canaan Mountain Wilderness and offer stunning views and world class recreational opportunities.

The BLM’s infrastructure improvements will support continued access for the approximately 14,000 visitors who use these trailheads annually.

Hiking and canyoneering are the most popular activities.
