A hiker from Texas is dead after falling from a cliff in southern Utah.

Officials with Utah State Parks say 54-year-old Charles Campassi of Houston was hiking in Dead Horse Point State Park near Moab when he fell yesterday.

He was reportedly walking with his family about 100 feet off of the West Rim Trail when he lost his footing and fell about 200 feet.

The state parks service says Campassi's death is an example of why hikers should remain on marked trails and be very careful around cliffs and steep drops.
