The state Board of Education says it will not be closing schools statewide in response to coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement yesterday, the state superintendent of public instruction said school closures are local decisions that are coordinated through the state.

Moreover, local health departments and the Utah Department of Health are empowered to close schools in the event of a public health emergency.

The superintendent directed school districts and charter schools not to close unless directed to do so by a local public health official.
