Utah was recently named the state most devoted to putting up Halloween decorations, with one in six Utah residents decorating their homes before October 1. It seems like Utahns love their spooky time, but you may be struggling with how to best get into the spooky season.

Here’s a few suggestions for you to make your spooky month the spookiest it can possibly be (I really like the word spooky).

Make Yourself a Jack-O-Lantern

Funny enough, there’s reportedly a pumpkin shortage this year, but that’s beside the point.

Having a pumpkin carving party is a great time with friends and family. There are tons of great tutorials online on how to best design a Jack-O-Lantern from the serious to the more comedic.

I’ve heard some folks say they don’t like the smell of pumpkins when they have to take out the guts of the fruit, but I think it smells incredible and it gets me in the mood for Halloween in spades.

Bust Out the Horror Movies

If you really want to get into spooky month, then you need to get scared at least once. Horror movies are a solid way to get the shivers and can really get your blood pumping.

If you have a problem with gore and nudity in your films, may I suggest “10 Cloverfield Lane.” It stars John Goodman in one the few roles where he gets to play the villain. It’s not bloody, but it’s tense, like really tense.

Play a Horror Game

Want to get REALLY scared? Do you own a game console? How about a PC? Do you have a smartphone? Then you can go a step beyond movies when indulging in horror media and play some horror games! You really can’t go wrong with some Resident Evil, but there are plenty of “trendy” picks you can go with as well.

Five Nights at Freddy’s can give you some quick scares on your smartphone with little to no setup. You just need to give it a download from the app store or Google Play.

If you have a PS5 or Xbox Series X, then you’re definitely going to want to play Alan Wake 2 when it releases on October 28 this year.

Getting scared is one of the best ways to truly appreciate Spooky Month for all it’s worth!
