A Dixie State University professor is asking Washington City to remove the statue of Robert Covington who was a slave owner.

Nancy Ross says the city should demonstrate their resolution that said racism, prejudice and hate have no place in the city and encourage the community to stand up against racism by removing the statue by July 24th.

She added that by keeping the statue, city leadership is sending the message to citizens that the city celebrates the racism and white supremacy that are a part of its history.

Washington City Mayor Kenneth Neilson says they're not planning to take action, and he doesn't know why people worry about stuff from 250 years ago.
