Groups supporting legal abortion in Utah say they have a great deal of support in their fight against new abortion restrictions in the state.

Kerrie Galloway of Planned Parenthood of Utah said yesterday that pregnant women don't need more hurdles thrown up by state lawmakers.

A poll commissioned for Planned Parenthood, the ACLU of Utah and the Alliance for a Better Utah shows 35-percent of Utahns want abortion laws to be less strict, 35-percent want them to stay the same, and 30-percent wanted stricter laws.

After being shown what laws are already on the books, 80-percent of those polled said there didn't need to be any new abortion laws passed.

The poll was released yesterday during a news conference expressing opposition to a bill that would ban almost all elective abortions in Utah.

State Senator Dan McCay of Riverton sponsored the bill banning most elective abortions and he believes most Utahns support his view of the issue.
